#NAEMSE09 Keeping in Touch with Preceptors
Communication to and from preceptors is a significant challenge for many EMT and paramedic instructor. A training center may rely on dozens, hundreds, or in the case of Nanci Medina of the UCLA Daniel Freeman Paramedic Education program thousands of preceptors. Nanci presented “Are your students safe, confident, and consistent” at the National Association of EMS Educators Symposium. The focus of her session was “ideas to make your field internship team more uniform in their verbal communication skills regarding the grading criteria and internship.”
Nanci advocates social media tools for preceptor communication. She has a private Yahoo! group for her 3000 preceptors (yes you read that correct 3000 preceptors) and she has also begun using Twitter. The purpose of the Yahoo! group is to share information and resources about preceptor locations, schedule, share files and discuss specific issues. The group is private and only for preceptors. The Twitter account, @UCLADFParamedic is a new account Nanci has started to discuss preceptor issues with a wider audience.
