Snake Bite Assessment and Treatment
Snake bites are a relatively rare 911 call for EMS providers in North America. In this blog post from Wilderness Medical Associates, Dr. David Johnson answers several questions about snake bite treatment.
In many cases, EMS providers should treat snake bites like other animal bites.
- Be mindful of any remaining threat to your own safety
- Recognize and treat ABC life threats
- Collect available history information, including animals vaccination status
- Transport patient to nearest hospital capable of treating patient’s wounds
- For snakes, know the availability of anti-venom at hospitals in your service area
