Each year over 750,000 patients are diagnosed with severe sepsis in the United States. Although most common in the hospital, sepsis often strikes patients in the out-of-hospital setting. There are many reasons for the frequency increase-an aging population, increasing frequency of immunosuppressant diseases, and an increase of drug-resistant bacteria.
