EMS and Social Networking
2009 looks to be the year that EMS dives into profession specific social networking. Many EMS providers, like me, were already using LinkedIn, Facebook, or My Space, but those sites are not profession or industry specific. In late 2008 three EMS specific social networking sites were deployed:
All three sites are powered by the Ning social networking platform. Since the features are similar I am able to use all three sites. I have joined and created groups at all three sites. I have also posted blog entries, customized my individual page, and uploaded video.
It will be interesting to observe and participate as the three sites evolve in 2009. I am curious about how EMS trainers and managers can use social networking for training and personnel management.
Another social networking/microblogging tool that I am especially excited about is Twitter which allows me to write 140 character updates (microblog posts). I can also include links to other content. Other twitter users follow my tweets and I follow other users. I have not found a lot of EMS personnel to follow, but I keep looking. Follow me at twitter.com/gfriese.
What are your ideas about the development and use of social networking for EMS personnel?
