The Art of Multiple Choice Quiz Writing: Response Types
Recall, application and evaluation are the main types of responses used for multiple choice quizzes.
Recall is the basic level of question response and includes information regarding facts and terms.
What chemical does the drug, ecstasy, cause some brain cells to release?
a. Serotonin
b. Catecholamine
c. Dopamine
d. Insulin
Application is the mid level of question response and asks a student to apply knowledge in order to answer a question.
You are on scene at a high school party discovered by local law enforcement. The police called for medical support when they found several teenagers in altered mental states who are completely oblivious to the presence of law enforcement. Which of the following may indicate possible ecstasy use?
a. Tablets with symbols
b. Butane lighter
c. Multi vitamins in an original container
d. Nasal inhaler
Evaluation is the highest level of question response and asks a learner to not only apply information but also to evaluate the information presented.
Your patient, Brenda, was discovered by her roommate in a feverish state. The roommate called 911, because she thought Brenda was “burning up” and was not able to help lower her temperature. Your assessment shows Brenda’s temperature at 104° F. Brenda earlier admitted to her roommate that she had ingested four ecstasy tablets. What aggressive cooling measure can you initiate before transporting Brenda?
a. Ask Brenda to drink a few glasses of water
b. Assist Brenda in taking a cool shower or bath
c. Help Brenda to take off clothing except undergarments
d. Place icepacks in Brenda’s axilla and groin areas
Use a mixture of responses in each quiz you write. Generally, I aim for 20% recall, 50% application and 30% evaluation for a quiz that best tests the knowledge gained by students.
