Online Education Lesson Structure

An online continuing education program for just about any topic can be presented following this simple outline:

  1. introduce the program
  2. describe the frequency and consequences of the problem
  3. review relevant anatomy and physiology
  4. explain assessment criteria and techniques for the problem
  5. explore treatment options for the problem

For example, if the problem was hip fractures this is how I would write a 20-30 minute CE lesson.

  1. case report or example about an elderly patient that sustained a hip fracture
  2. describe the frequency and consequences costs of hip fracture that might include hospitalization, loss of independent living, etc
  3. review relevant anatomy and physiology including the bones that make up the hip joint, where fractures occur, normal range of motion
  4. explain assessment criteria and techniques for the problem such as physical exam techniques, distal circulation, sensation, and movement, abnormal positioning, pain and tenderness on exam
  5. explore treatment options for the problem such as pain management, splinting, IV fluids, position of comfort during transport, and lifting/moving the patient

How would you use or revise this outline?
