Thank you, EMS!

Thank you Green Bay Fire Department EMS for taking care of my daughter!

This week our four year old daughter had a seemingly innocent fall from her bed, which resulted in a badly deformed and fractured forearm. I quickly assessed that any movement could result in further injury, including nerve damage or pushing the bone through the skin, and called 911. The nearby fire department responded within five minutes with the ambulance service quickly behind them. All who responded were kind, competent, and reassuring.

The paramedics used the Wong Baker Faces Pain Scale to assess her pain. She was offered IV pain meds, but said her pain was not great. Her arm was splinted using towels and soft wrap for the ambulance ride to the hospital.

While my daughter was being cared for, one of the paramedics not treating her, sat and talked with my three year old son explaining to him what was happening. He also found shoes and a coat for my son to wear with freezing temperatures outside. My daughter was strapped onto my lap on the cot and my son in the carseat in the ambulance for the ride to the hospital. Because the injuries were not life threatening, one of the paramedics offered to go back into the house to turn off the lights and lock the doors for us.

We are grateful for the terrific service we received, mostly for my daughter’s injury, but also for the non medical care, such as talking to my son and locking our house. It helps dull some of the pain of the fracture, when you are being cared for by reliable and thoughtful professionals.

Thanks,

Martha Bonnie
