Five Leading Causes of Death
The release of the age adjusted leading causes of death by rate in last week’s CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly should not come as any surprise to EMS providers. View CDC MMWR report.
Top five:
- Heart disease
- Cancer
- Cerbrovascular disease
- Chronic lower respiratory distress
- Unintentional injury
The decline in heart disease death rate is interesting to me as an EMS educator. Since 2001 EMS providers have seen new emergency cardiac care guidelines, increase emphasis on rapid transport to the cath lab, and other efforts aimed at prevention and early intervention. Is there a connection?
