Shark attacks make for sensational headlines that are broadcast around the world. Like any animal bite a shark bite can cause significant tissue damage and has the potential to cause airway, breathing, or circulation life threats.

It is estimated that dog bites result in 750,000 ER visits, 6000 hospitalizations, and twenty fatalities per year. Although I don’t know the exact statistics I would guess that many more people actually die of dog and cat bites, mosquito bites, and tick transferred infections than shark bites. The chance of a shark encounter is extremely low. This video describes the odds of a shark attack on humans in the United States.
